After graduating from high school, Monique Ruttmann initially trained as a draughtswoman specializing in structural engineering before beginning her law studies at the University of Konstanz. She gained an insight into the English legal system during a one-year course at the University of Essex in England. Monique Ruttmann successfully completed her legal clerkship at Ravensburg District Court in 2001 with the 2nd state examination.

She began her professional career as a fully qualified lawyer at a property development company in Hamburg, which built and managed shopping centers in addition to residential construction. Here she worked primarily in the areas of contract law, commercial tenancy law and real estate law.

She then moved to a law firm in Neumünster in 2002, where she worked as a licensed lawyer on matters including private construction law and real estate law.

After family and parental leave, Monique Ruttmann worked for more than 15 years from October 2008 as a legal advisor in Hamburg for an investment company for real estate in the healthcare sector, which invests in inpatient nursing homes, clinics and retirement homes. Her work focused on real estate law, in particular commercial tenancy law and construction and architectural law, where she was able to acquire extensive specialist knowledge of healthcare real estate. She was responsible for the legal implementation of real estate acquisitions and new construction projects - from project development to handover to the operators after completion of the construction work. In the management phase of the properties, she provided support in particular with lease agreement issues with the operators as well as with necessary renovation, conversion and extension measures on and in the properties.
